A Fresh Look at Zinc Journeys

A new school year is a chance for a fresh start—and we've spent the past year rethinking Zinc Journeys from the ground up.
Along the way, we listened to teachers, watched students use the platform, and asked a guiding question:
How can we make reading growth feel more accessible, more engaging, and actually sustainable throughout the school year?
The result is a refreshed Journeys experience designed to help students (and their teachers) spend less time wondering what to do next and more time reading.
What's New
Simpler navigation for teachers
Reports, assignments, activities, classroom resources, and professional learning are now organized in a streamlined left-hand navigation, making it easier to find what you need during a busy school day.
A smoother experience for students
Students will notice a cleaner design, simpler navigation, and a Journey that flows more naturally from one reading experience to the next. Whether they're choosing what to read next on their independent Journey or completing teacher assignments, it's easier to jump back in and find meaningful work—automatically delivered at the right level of challenge.
A refreshed reading journey
We've redesigned two key parts of Zinc Journeys.
Lift Off is now a short bridge experience that invites students to reflect on what motivates them and how they feel about reading before diving into longer texts.
Our former Lift Off independent reading experiences have become Missions—themed collections of articles and excerpts that make it easier for students to explore topics, genres, and authors they're genuinely interested in. Missions continue to include pre-reading vocabulary and comprehension support, and we've expanded opportunities for students to explore vocabulary independently along the way.
Why We Made These Changes
At Zinc, we believe reading growth isn't just about helping students complete activities—it's about helping them become readers.
That's why we build everything around love-powered effort.
Teachers create the conditions for reading growth. They teach the skills, model strong reading habits, ask thoughtful questions, and encourage students when the work gets hard.
But the reason for reading—the motivation to keep going, to stay curious, to make meaning from a difficult text—has to come from the student.
Our job isn't to manufacture that motivation. It's to help students discover it for themselves.
The refreshed Journeys experience is designed with that goal in mind: give students the skills they need, invite them to reflect on why reading matters, and provide authentic opportunities to practice, explore, and grow throughout the school year.
