What is Zinc READing Labs?

Zinc Reading Labs is a supplemental online literacy program that combines engaging vocabulary games, high-interest text, gaming elements and detailed reports to get middle and high school students reading and on a trajectory towards college-readiness.

WHY ZINC READING LABS?

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?

Research consistently supports Zinc's unique approach of explicit in-context vocabulary instruction, close-reading practice and engaging content. More on how and why this combination is effective can be found in the Improving Adolescent Literacy report from the Institute of Educational Sciences.

WHO'S USING ZINC?

Our reach is fast growing! Currently, Zinc is in over 400 districts around the United States and is part of the New York City Department of Education's iZone Short Cycle Evaluation Challenge.

In summer of 2016, Zinc was integrated into the College Board's SpringBoard Digital ELA platform, allowing Zinc to reach 2M+ users!

  • "I use Zinc as a warm-up with my students for the first 10-15 minutes of class. Even with the rambunctious after-lunch class, time on Zinc calms the kids down and gets them into student mode. The room gets so quiet that you can hear a pin drop. When it's time to move on from Zinc to the main lesson, I almost don't want to interrupt - I feel like I'm having to wake a sleeping baby. When I do tell them that Zinc time is over, I hear loud groans of disappointment: they actually want more time to read and study vocabulary!"
    - Susan Van Doren, English/Comp Sci teacher & STEM leader, Whittell High School, Nevada
  • "The engagement is great, and some kids are even using Zinc on their own outside of class - that's unprecedented."
    - Paul De Maret, English teacher, Rocky Mountain High School, Colorado
  • "I love that Zinc allows me to customize my in-context vocabulary instruction in a way that my students enjoy! The program makes vocabulary integration seamless, whether I'm using it for SAT prep, AP rhetoric, novels, or supplementary reading!"
    - Karen Kennedy Floyd, National Board Certified Teacher of English, Gig Harbor High School, Washington
  • "With Zinc, students are able to examine, articulate, and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses as critical readers, which allows them to personalize their goals and outcomes. It's incredible to watch!"
    - Rebecca Wenrich, Gig Harbor High School, Washington
  • "Zinc is a perfect fit for my reading intervention class. The reports provide great insight for one-on-one work with students to support their reading growth."
    - Nathan Busse, English teacher, Bonham Academy, Texas
  • "Given the high level of Zinc's questions, the program was a helpful tool in our students' preparation for the Florida Standards Assessment, SAT and ACT. Having correct and incorrect answer choices explained empowered students in a self-guided learning process."
    - Betsy Leis, English Language Arts Instructional Coach, Oak Ridge High School, Florida
